Περίληψη

In this paper we compare Greek information structure with that of English, German, Spanish, and Italian, examining structures associated with specific focus types, namely information and contrastive focus, as well as contrastive topic. Our goal is to investigate aspects of Greek information structure in an attempt to answer the question why Greek, despite its comparatively greater degree of word order flexibility, does not have certain patterns which are attested in the other languages. To this end, we systematically study subject information focus structures and VP-fronting. Our examination shows that Greek neither employs p-movement or scrambling for subject information focusing nor has VP fronting for information focus or contrastive topic/focus purposes.
