Κυπριακή κοινή και Κοινή Νέα Ελληνική: Γιατί οι δύο ποικιλίες δεν συγκλίνουν;

Περίληψη

Τhis paper examines some interesting aspects of the processes of koineization in Cyprus. Specifically it focuses on the reasons why some local dialect elements resist leveling but also on the reasons why the Cypriot Greek koine does not display full convergence to Standard Greek despite the fact that it includes standard or standard-like elements and hybrid structures; it appears that at present full dedialectalization and convergence to the standard is arrested. It is argued that non-convergence is due to a host complex reasons having to do with the intricacies of diglossia in this particular setting as well as with the complexities of the processes of acquisition of structural properties of a second, related variety. The data from the Cypriot Greek koine are therefore particularly interesting as they shed light on both the notion of bidialecticism and the relationship between language and identity in diglossic contexts.
