Other-attentiveness occurs when a recipient of trouble-telling chooses to disengage by introducing a topic shift which, however, pays attention to the teller, according to Jefferson’s (1984) initial formulation. The present study utilizes Conversation Analysis and Membership Categorization Analysis combined with Face to investigate a group of utterances (schematically represented by “Don’t stress yourself out”) which, at first sight, seem to be offered other-attentively. Analysis of their lexical/syntactic composition, and preference and alignment status within a number of sequences (accusation, advice, offer), and across a variety of authentic situations, exposes a controversial self-attentive function.
