Τα άτονα φωνήεντα στη Νέα Ελληνική των Ελλήνων μεταναστών στον Καναδά
Περίληψη
We examine the pattern of unstressed middle vowel raising for 50 Greek immigrants who moved to Canada during the period 1945-1975, 38 of whom are speakers from northen Greece and 12 are from the Peloponnese. Using linear mixed effects analysis of 9011 tokens of all five vowels produced during semi-structured interviews, we show that raising occurs in both groups. However, only northern Greek speakers raise unstressed /e/ and /o/ to an extent that they are differentiated from their stressed counterparts. We also show that raised variants are not the same as the high vowels /i/ and /u/.
