ΦΩΝΟΛΟΓΙΚΑ ΦΑΙΝΟΜΕΝΑ ΤΗΣ ΜΕΓΑΡΙΚΗΣ ΔΙΑΛΕΚΤΟΥ
Abstract
This paper deals with the phonological phenomena in the Modern Greek dialect of Megara. The dialect of Megara, sharing similarities with the dialects of Kymi and Aigina (cf. Kontosopoulos [1994] 2006), is placed in the so called old Athenian dialectal group (cf. Newton 1972), as it retains various characteristics of the old Athenian dialect which is no longer in use. Elaborating on oral and written data, we discuss the following phenomena: i) the pronunciation of υ as [u] or [ju], ii) tsitakismos or depalatalization, according to Pantelidis (2009) and Newton (1972) respectively, iii) the epenthesis of /γ/, and iv) the primary hiatus.
