The aims and objectives of Higher Education (19th – 21st century): a philosophical analysis based on the work of John Henry Newman (full text in Greek)
Abstract
This paper presents and analyzes the ideas of John Henry Newman on the role and purpose of the University and the provided knowledge, as reflected mainly in his book "The Idea of a University". It emphasizes on the importance of liberal-humanistic education as an ideal of Higher Education leading to the individual’s intellectual cultivation and multi-faceted development. It prizes the interconnection of disciplines and “broad specialization” over specialized “branches of knowledge”. He believes that the University is the place for universal knowledge teaching and for the individual’s constant mind and spiritual development.
